Diabetes and Pregnancy
Diabetes is the caused when the blood glucose level rises in the body. Diabetes is commonly of three types: Type I diabetes or
the Juvenile diabetes is auto-immune disorder which is caused due to less secretion of the insulin hormone pituitary gland due destruction of the beta cells. It is also referred to as the insulin-dependent diabetes. The other type of diabetes is Type II diabetes or Diabetes Mellitus and is characterized by high level of glucose in the blood and the third type of diabetes which is associated with the pregnant women is the Gestational Diabetes which is caused due to hormonal changes during the pregnancy and leads to increase in glucose level in the blood. Gestational diabetes if not taken care off at proper time can prove to be harmful for the mother as well as the baby. Though Gestational diabetes goes away after the pregnancy but there are chances of suffering from diabetes later on.
It is often advisable to go for regular check-ups during the pregnancy period as it will help your doctor to know whether you have diabetes or not and moreover they will recommend you to take precautionary measures to prevent the occurrence of diabetes before or after the delivery of your baby.
Pregnancy though causes excitement as it gives the women a new feeling altogether of giving birth to a new individual but women who have diabetes at the time of pregnancy are automatically considered to be at high risk, so an extra care is required at the time of pregnancy to ensure safe and uncomplicated delivery. Keeping your glucose level close to normal is very essential during pregnancy as by doing so not only you will remain healthy but you will also have a healthy baby. This can be done by following the advice of your doctor and following a healthy diet as recommended. A lot of hormonal changes occur inside the body during the pregnancy so it is required to take proper care of your diet during and after the pregnancy.
Gestational diabetes can worsen your already existing diabetes condition and can be harmful for your baby as it can cause premature delivery, can also cause baby to be underweight or can have other health problems at the time of birth. Moreover the chance of miscarriage or stillbirth increases in case of pregnant women suffering from gestational diabetes. Give up your unhealthy eating habits and avoid consumption of alcohol and quit smoking during pregnancy as they can aggravate the diabetes during pregnancy and can be harmful for both the mother and the baby. Avoid taking stress during the pregnancy, forget all the worries and think about the new life that you are going to give birth to after few days.
Be in touch with your doctor and get your glucose level checked at regular intervals of time. Follow the advice of the obstetrician as now you don’t have an additional responsibility to take care of. In case of any problem immediately contact the doctor instead of fixing up the matter all by yourself.
Someone is waiting to call you MOTHER, take care of yourself and you will hear it very soon.
