Drug Rehabilitation – A Treatment for Drug Addicts
Drugs can be defined as substances which are used in order to restrain an undesired condition.
Extremely habitual use or constant consumption of such a substance in order to change the state of body or mind, excluding the medicinal purpose leads to what is known as drug abuse. In other words we can say that drug abuse is basically an inappropriate utilization of drugs.
There are a number of illegal drugs which are being sold in the marketplace. This is the possible cause of drug obsession or addiction. Illegal drugs can be categorized as steroids, stimulants, sedatives, Depressants and Narcotics. Each and every type of a drug can be easily abused no matter what is its nature that is whether it is an illegal drug like heroin and cocaine, prescription drugs such as pain killers or tranquilizers and the over the counter medicines such as cough medicines.
A number of sportsmen and athletes make use of anabolic steroids in order to enhance their body muscles and thus lead to drug abuse. The presence of caffeine in the soft drinks and coffee are also the possible cause of drug abuse. In addition to this cigarettes contain nicotine which is also a source of drug abuse. Narcotics contain methadone, heroin, opium and morphine.
Stimulants are the class of drugs like marijuana, hallucinogens, amphetamines and cocaine. Then we have depressants which are essentially sedatives, barbiturates and alcohol. A person is called a drug addict when he becomes totally dependent, mentally and physically on the above drugs and undergoes symptoms of withdrawal whenever there is a stoppage or reduction of the drug usage.
We can define drug rehab as the phenomenon of psycho therapeutic and medical treatment for all the people who are addicted to the prescribed and illegal drugs. A majority of the drug rehab plans aim at teaching the patients the various methods by which they can interact with the environment which is drug free. These individuals are advised to stay away from people who consume such drugs for the purpose of abusing them; this is also a portion of our criminal justice scheme. Most of the individuals who are caught abusing drugs in small quantities are asked to go to the drug rehabilitation centers in place of a prison. These drug rehabs cure the patients by making use of two methods which are medical and behavioral therapies. The latter method consists of giving counseling to both the patient and their family, telling them about the kind of support the patient needs. The former method consists of various drugs which are given to the patient to cancel out the withdrawal symptoms.
