It is essential to have a normal body weight in order to be free from diseases caused by being overweight or obese. Also, in order to be able to effectively perform the tasks of everyday life, one should have enough stamina which is usually lacking in overweight and obese people. Overweight causes an increase in the possible number of diseases that a person can fall victim to.

Not all those who want to reduce weight understand the relationship between digestion and weight. The weight of a person is the result of various factors. Foremost it depends on two factors.

The first is the amount of food eaten by an individual and the second is the exercise of an individual in every day life. The category of food can be further divided into how much food is eaten, the kind of food eaten and the amount of nutrients present in the food eaten. This also influences the type, duration and amount of exercise done in every day life.

The digestion of the food that we eat is followed by the absorption of the nutrients from the food into the stream of blood. These nutrients are then utilized for performing the vital functions of the body. The rate at which this release of energy from the food eaten by a person takes place is called the Basal Metabolic Rate of the body. The basal metabolic rate determines how quickly and how much energy is extracted from the food eaten. This is closely related to the weight of a person. Another similar sounding but different meaning term is Body Mass Index.

When the basal metabolic rate is high, the digestion is quick and energy released is effectively used. On the other hand, a low basal metabolic rate causes ineffective and slow release of energy from food. This is a constraint in digestion of food and leads to storage of energy in body. The body mass index, on the other hand, when higher, indicates towards an overweight person. These facts relating to the body weight, digestion of food and rate of release of energy must be kept in mind when following any diet plan or exercise schedule in order to lose weight.
